Crooked Paths

April 16th, 2008

Last night I had a dream that Lela and I were walking through a wooded area during twilight, when we came upon a group of hippie kids sitting in a circle and smoking pot. They were friendly, so we stopped to chat for a bit and one of them eventually offered us a pipe. To my great surprise, Lela accepted it and took a big drag out of it. She passed the pipe to me, and I did the same.

As we were walking away, Lela realized what she had done and became distressed about it. A nearby old woman saw Lela’s distress and–through some intuition–saw Lela’s character as well.

She said, “It is not that the Path is so crooked. It is you who are so straight.”

It felt extremely profound, and I immediately saw a vision of a path that had slight bends here and there. In the path there was a long narrow object that was moving along and bumping against the curves of the path. It was clear that the old woman was trying to comfort Lela by explaining that life’s little twists could sometimes seem like great loops, because Lela was so perfect herself, and those same twists and turns were only easily handled by people with bends and kinks of their own.

The analogy seems a little flawed. Nevertheless, I’m posting my dream here because I rarely hear anything that feels profound in my dreams, and this seemed to have a ring of truth to it.

Working Hard

April 7th, 2008

Trulia was featured on the Google channel on YouTube. They came to the office and took some video of a few of us talking about how we use Google Maps on our site.

They also got some video of me playing Guitar Hero III. Look for me about 2:20 into the film.

Saul Williams

March 15th, 2008

A heads up to all my friends that think they could enjoy a brilliant lyricist that isn’t in the mainstream consciousness:

Saul Williams is performing at Slim’s on March 21st. Lela and I will be there with a couple of our friends.

If you want to check out Saul, you could go to his website where you can buy MP3s to his latest album for $5, you could go to his MySpace page and check out some of his songs for free, or you could go to You Tube and check out a few of the cool videos there.

Happy PI Day

March 14th, 2008

Happy Pi Day, everyone!

How many digits of PI can you recite without checking first? (I did the first 27 without messing up.)

In Rainbows

October 12th, 2007

I’ve had Radiohead’s new album In Rainbows for two days now, and I’ve come to the conclusion that it is amazing. It’s my new soundtrack. Definitely up there with Amnesiac and The Bends.

Gratitude

October 2nd, 2007

Lela and I watched our waitress came out with our ginger ale and coffee and try to find the recipients. I knew they were ours, but I’ve never been one to call out for my food. If someone else had ordered the exact same thing, the embarrassment would be unbearable!

She found her way over to our table and asked, “Who’s courageous?”

I smiled and raised my hand.

“You’re courageous!” she said, setting down my coffee. “And you’re effervescent!” she said, setting Lela’s ginger ale in front of her.

A mood for discovery on Saturday brought Lela and I to Cafe Gratitude for the first time. I’d first heard about it on The Well and had been eager to eat there ever since. Cafe Gratitude serves organic, raw, and “living” food, while enlightening their customers of their own self-worth and instilling them with gratitude for all that’s good in their life. The latter is achieved greatly through their menu: The spring-roll appetizer dish is called “I Am Insightful.” The pesto pizza is “I Am Sensational.”

Lela ordered the Live Sun Burger (”I Am Cheerful”) and I asked for the sampler plate (”I Am Abundant”). Our waitress smiled at us and said, “Great! You are cheerful, and you are abundant!”

How could you not love that?

Getting the same service we got there from any other restaurant would have been startlingly bad; it took several minutes for anyone to notice we’d come in the door and the waitresses didn’t seem to have any idea where food was going once it came out of the kitchen. Yet at Cafe Gratitude it was all part of the charming experience. The staff was friendly, the food was delicious, and the quiet garden (except for occasional rumblings of the streetcars) was a delightful break from the noisier restaurants with weary waitresses. Our servers never acted as if being friendly was just another cheesy part of getting customers to come back.

The time for dessert came and the chocolate mousse sounded especially good to me. “I think we’re feeling Magnificent,” I told our waitress.

“You all are magnificent!”

So was the mousse. We left feeling incredibly grateful for being able to live in San Francisco.
